Appu, Ned, Toby, ken, Vij n Ancy r enjoying their lunch break chatting n gossiping……
Sandy enters the class room at this moment…
Appu:- Hey, here comes our buji. Sandy how was your test…will u get the placement?
Sandy:- The test went ok, but that doesn’t mean I will get thru…
Appu:- Wow! This calls for a treat…
Ned:- Appu wait…just listen…Sandy had only completed his first step towards getting placed…
Appu:- Only the first step? then what are the other steps?
Ned:- Its different for different companies. Generally most companies starts with the written test which itself may consist of technical part, CAT model qns & in some case essay writing…
Appu:- then?
Ancy:- then comes Group discussion which is an inevitable round in job selection which is of course followed by interviews…
Ned:- Interviews are also of 2 types; Hr interview and technical interview..
Sandy:- Hr interview tries to find out more about your personality while technical interview is to find out more about your technical know-how.
Appu:- Oh my God, I never thought getting a job in MNC’s is this much difficult…
Ned: - why do u worry about getting into MNC’s? you are not writing the test…
Ancy:- why are you not writing the test appu? are you not interested in this kind of jobs…?
Appu:- ya, you are right, i want to do MBA after my B.Tech…
Ned:- hahaha…I will tell the reason for his interest to do MBA, he can’t even write this test as his aggregate is below the required for this company….
Ancy:- what is the required aggregate?
Ned:- that also depends on the company…for incampus they specify high cuttoff like 70 or 75%...but for offcampus it is much less…like for e.g. TCS specify 65% n Infosys have 68% cutoff…
Appu:- what is the difference btw incampus n offcampus…so can I write if I get off the campus?
Ned:- companies come for placements in the 6th or 7th sem which is called incampus for which they come to our college & conduct all their tests here itself but in offcampus they conduct this regularly or periodically outside may be in their company itself or some other common place like shreds. You can even register at their site www.shredskerala.org in the 6th sem. They will let u know when vacancies arise in the companies registered with them.
Appu:- uh! er! even you don’t have the required cuttoff Ned….anyway am for MBA.
Sandy:- So are you preparing for it? It needs lot of hard work & preparation to get admission for MBA.
Appu:- yes, thats right. if you wanna get into the top institutions like IIM-Ahmedabad, you should be in tat top slot in CAT exam. It’s the same in other IIM’s throughout India…
Ancy:- I think you are interested in doing it in US, right?
Appu:- yes, doing MBA in foreign countries is a new trend tat is on the rise. The favorite destinations are US, UK, Australia etc. I am for US.
Ned:- I have read that AUS is cheaper comparing the other 2 destinations & the no of students from India doing higher studies in AUS is the highest among the international students….
Appu:- you are right there…but I have got relatives in US which is why I opt for US.
Sandy:- so what all are you studying for MBA entrance?
Ancy:- CAT consists of Quantitative ability, reading comprehension, verbal ability, data interpretation & logical reasoning. In some years they even include GK as one topic. CAT is only for IIM’s, for other institutes you have to write their entrance test. MAT is all India test, SNAP is for symbiosis & then there is XAT, XLRI etc …
Sandy:- it means tough job ahead right? all the best Appu..
Ned:- hey, how come ancy know all about this? is she also going for MBA ? i tought she is interested in NID?
Ancy:- yes, ofocurse am for NID…but it has the same kind of test for admission..so if I prepare for MBA, i can attempt for both…
Ned:- 2 birds in one shot???
Ancy:-make it 3 birds…I can also attempt NIFT entrance…
Ned:- national institute of fashion technology?are you crazy to go the fashion way after B.Tech???
Ancy:- why? NIFT offers pg course in fashion technology n fashion management. And you know wt? the qualification is B.Tech(any course)
Sandy:- thats new news to me…
Ancy:-am also interested in MBA but my first preference is for NID…so if I loose NID am for MBA…
Ned:- hey don’t think tat you will loose…strong determination & hardwork will get you through anywhere…
Appu:- anyways..i have got company…
Toby:- let me ask a doubt in btw..what is this NID?
Ancy:- NID stands for national institute of designing…
Toby:- what is this consanguinity btw NID & b.tech…?
Ned:- what? consangu what?
Appu:- don’t get frightened Ned. Its like Toby to use these words. consanguinity means close affinity or connection.
Ancy:- NID offers pg courses in Product Design, Furniture & Interior Design , Toy Design & Development, Software & User Interface Design, for these they require B.Tech students…tat means people like us…one course tat am particularly interested in toy designing which requires B.tech in IT!
Toby:- toy designing? sounds interesting…
Ancy:- log onto www.afdindia.com & you will get all details.
Ned:- The National Institute of Design (NID) is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multidisciplinary institutions in the field of design education, applied research, training, design consultancy services and outreach programmes. They use to take up prestigious work for Govt. of India or for big names in the industry…tat way the students get a high exposure.
Toby:- are you interested in designing & all?
Ancy:- ya, one of my hobbies is drawing & I have done some designing work for class purposes.
Toby:- so how is the test when compared to MBA? tough or easy?
Ancy:- it maintains the same toughness as MBA…there r only few seats available for this course. so geting one is damn difficult…
Toby:- like Ned said, self confidence & hardwork will prove the point.
Ken:- you also need grace of God…
Toby:- tats right, you do your part the rest God will do. Anyway all the best Ancy.
Ancy: thanx Toby.by the way whats your ambition?
Toby:- am in for pedagogy.
Ned:- again!!! He is again talking rubbish.
Appu:- Mandan,eng padichitilla alle??mal medium anenu tonunnu….
Ned:- mati mati…yengi para wt is pedagogy?
Appu:- er..uh…er..pedagogy yenu paranja…athu pinne…athu paranju tharan manasilla…poyi dictionary noku..yellam njan paranju thanal spoon feeding ayi pokum…
Ned:- arinjoodagil athu paranja pore…veruthe smayamkalayunathethina?
Ken:- pedagogy means the art of or profession of teaching...
Ned:- oh my god….kidilam how cum u know this? didnt expect this from u.
Ken:- thank u…thank u…sorry guys …am preparing for GRE…hav to develop my eng…
Appu:- what is the consanguinity, sorry Ned I mean connection btw gre & eng?
Ken:- gre stands for Graduate Records Examination. It is needed for doing MS in US. The General Test is now composed of verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing sections. While the verbal & quantitative sections are similiar to MBA tests, the new analytical writing section is different. It consists of two separately-timed
tasks: a 45-minute “Present Your Perspective on an Issue” task and a 30-minute “Analyze an Argument”task. You can get more details at their site www.gre.com .
Toby:- it’s similiar to the M.tech pgm in India which I am preparing for.
Ken:- The only deterrent in writing this exam is the huge expense involved!!!but u can try to get scholarships or private sponsorships if you are smart enough.Usually a score >2000 is considered as a good score.
Sandy:- is the test tough like my test?
Ken:- no not much.if you are good in maths you can easily get through.eng plays a key role in the score.the only problem is geting the visa & cash which is an inevitability!!!
Toby:- tats I why I choose M.Tech!
Ancy:- M.tech is usually persuaded by students aiming to become teachers right?
Toby:- ya, i want to be a teacher…
Ned:- but you can also get an MNC job even after M.Tech.I am also writing GATE.
Appu:- GATE ? how can you write a gate? You can only open it, right?
Ned:- someone pls help me to kill this guy.
Sandy:- I will help u.
Appu:- hey wait guys, jus clear my genuine doubt.abt this gate.
Ned:- k..k…this is your last chance.GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It opens the gate for higher studies!
Sandy: where all can you study for M.Tech?
Toby:- all the leading IITS, IISC & also NITS offers M.Tech courses with a scholarship of 5000/- per month if you are selected on the basis of Gate score. To get selected you will have to get a score of more than 98%!!!
Sandy:-tats cool.
Ned:- there are also private institutions like IIITs which offer M.Tech in IT related subjects. But you won’t get the scholarship even they consider your gate score.
Toby:- also M.Tech can in turn lead you to PhD if you are interested.
Toby:- gate is held in the 2nd Sunday of every feb.its an objective type entrance test whose syllabus is the topics from s3-s8 of the respectve branch that you have selected.
Ancy:- is this the only way you can get admission for M.Tech?
Ned:- No. You can also be sponsored by some institutions like govt organizations or even MNCs. All the above said institutions have seats reserved for sponsored students. AICTE offers a pgm in which you can enroll & study M.tech fully sponsored by them but have to sign a bond of working as a lecturer in one of their institutions.
Ned:- all the best Toby. hope you get through the gates in time before the security closes it.hahaha
Sandy:- oh my god.Ned tyring to be like Appu?
Toby:- there is one among us who is sitting silent. He seems to be in some toughts.
Ned:- You mean Vij? his mind will be among the galaxies now.thinking about the stars. How to get into the mars.
Appu:- wow! So he is interested in astrology? Sorry I mean astronomy???
Vij:- I want to do some course in astronomy. but there is no such course here except for a MSc in astrophysics in KU.I tried IIT entrance as one IIT offers astronomy, but didn’t get through.
Ned:- I have read today in Hindu-education plus that you can write associate membership examinations which is recognized as equivalent to a B.tech degree? Cant you try tat?
Vij:- ya,you are right.I have also read it. But it is for aeronautical engineering not astronomy. Those who have a bachelor degree can write their section B examination leading to the award of degree AMAESI which is recognized as equivalent to a B.E degree in aeronautical engineering by the aeronautical society of India. To appear in the examination conducted by the society, we should register ourselves as student member of the society of India.
Toby:- so what is your future plan? Continue with a B.Tech related job or pursue astronomical interests?
Vij:- I sure want a job. But I would prefer it to be at VSSC or DRDO or any research faculties.
Sandy:- isn’t it difficult to get into their???
Vij:- ya,in the past it was very difficult. they use to call for freshers very rarely.but for the past one or 2 yrs, they are regularly calling B.Tech students for test & interview. DRDO conducts Scientist Entry Test(SET) for EC,EE,CS n M.Tech B.Tech holders. Their site www.drdo.org has all the details.
Ned:- so freshers have a chance there?
Vij:- definitely, if you get through, they will put you in different projects each time which will be quite interesting, helping us to dwell in to the depth of Indian research facilities. Look out the newspapers for notifications.
Ned:-You can also get into similar project work in Govt. level if u gets through the IES.
Sandy:- what is this IES?
Ned:- IES stands for Indian Engineering Service. UPSC annually conducts IES exams in the month of june which are written by B.Tech students. Once selected, you will be placed in central govt institutions with high pay scale.
Sandy:- can I write IES?
Ned:- unfortunately no.You cant write IES.only CIVIL,MECH,ELEC & EC B.Tech holders or final year students can write IES.
Appu:- thank god! there is atleast one exam which you cant write!!!
Ned: no medicine is still invented for jealousy!!!
Vij:- How come you know all about these exams, Ned??? Havn’t heard of this IES before.
Ned:- newspapers & also Competition success review(CSR).have to read it regularly.
Ancy:- why?
Ned:- I am preparing for civil service exams for which one of the study material is newspaper!
Toby:- You need to select optional subject for civil service, right? so is there engineering subjects?
Ned:- only elec, mech & civil are there for civil service,no ec,cs or it!!! So have to select entirely different subjects from the available options.
Ancy:- then why you took IT?
Ned:- becouse I am interested in computers & technology.even if I get through civilservice,my b.tech is not a waste.the experience as a professional will sure enrich my knowledge & vision to work as a bureaucrat.
Sandy:- how do you get into civil service?
Ned:- You will have to pass prelims to get into mains .then pass mains to go 4 interview which is the final step!!!Prelims have 2 subjects one is optional & the other is General studies while mains got 9 subjects including eng,2nd lang(optional),essay,2 papers each for 1st & 2nd optionals & general studies. You get a maximum of 4 chances!!!
Appu:- so you can get through at least in the fourth chance!!!
Ned:- Nice Joke! But I didn’t enjoy that one.
Appu:- Gosh!!! Here miss for the next period!
Ned:- K guys, before we go,I wanna let you know tat in addition to all tat we discussed here there are many other options after b.tech.You can even go in for CBI or RAW test to get into those agencies.
Appu:- RAW?
Sandy:- Research & Analysis Wing. It is the spy agency of India like CIA of US, MI2 of UK or KGB of Russia.
Ned:- regularly read newspaper to notice the UPSC notifications for these exams. reading CSR(competition success review) is also very useful. it contains all the notifications of UPSC in its last page.
Ned:- do you people know tat you can even do a pg course in plantation management after b.tech if you are interested.
Ancy:- you are joking!!! plantation management after b.tech?
Ned:- No , am serious, it was their in the hindu educaton plus. there is a column called career guidance which is about new courses & notifications. Each week they put up career options which u have never heard before in your life like being a technical writer, sound & light engineering , multimedia & animation careers , career in armed forces technical wing after b.tech etc etc.
Ned:- Its ultimately your desire & interest that decides which career you should take. And it also needs some will power to take these offhand careers as most people think all roads lead to an MNC after B.Tech!!!
